On The Brink

Brink is a new first person shooter from Splash Damage set for release this fall. This will be the developers first original title powered by the id Tech 4 (Doom III) engine with improved rendering technology. One of the most notable new game features it offers is the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System. Which allows the player to slide, jump, and climb over almost any obstacle automatically with the press of a button.

This new player movement mechanic is probably the most interesting feature to me, but I do have a few issues with their art style. If I had to describe my feelings about this stylized look in one word it would probably be “beastly.” No offense, but the exaggerated proportions are very unflattering.

Splash Damage is a British company and their culture has obviously influenced the design here. Not that I have any problem with that. I enjoy experiencing different cultures immensely and I like the fact that the game looks and sounds more European then American, but for me the character stylization just isn’t appealing. However, the rest of the game does look very promising, so I will definitely be keeping an eye on it.

Er what? How is the character stylisation in anyway English? That screenshot relates to our culture in 0 ways its just a design direction they’ve gone with. And its not something that appeals to me either.
